Doi Num Sub Project

The Doi Num Sub Project started off as a one woman’s vision of improved life style for the hill communities of Thailand. When the hill farmers were finally weaned away from growing poppy to feed the heroin trade, they had to struggle with the highly competitive market of their extremely perishable cold-weather fruit and vegetable crops.

“Miss Dusadee”, had observed in her community development work in the north how the hill communities grew a proliteration of herbs for their own culinary and medicinal uses. Her own mother has a wealth of herbal lore that “Miss Dusadee” found encouraging. It started her organising a few villages experimentally into a herbal cooperatives. While in Bangkok, she formed the Oriental Herbs Co, Ltd, to design and market the subsequent products.

Now, 1,600 acres of land dotted around Chiang Rai and nearby provinces are perfuming the northern air with a large variety of herbs grown with exact science and definite purpose, then processed hygienically into marketable products, both for domestic consumption and for export.

Doi means mountain, Num, water and Sub, absorption. There is no mountain of that name in Thailand. The project’s name is in fact its vision: as ground water gathers into brooks which grow into rivers which keep the land fertile, so will herbs, nature’s own bounty, grow into a mainstream business that will bring prosperity and happiness to all who are involved.
